Renovated Taylor Meadows completely open to public July 4

STRATEGIC POND

The first major renovation to the Taylor Meadows Golf Course will be open to the public starting on July 4. Taylor Meadows will be accepting tee times for the newly renovated course beginning tomorrow (Tuesday, June 27).

Led by architect Steve Forrest of Hills Forrest, the renovation focused on the course’s 10th, 11th and 12th holes. Construction teams have been onsite daily creating an all-new 165-yard Par 3 11th hole; a new 515-year Par 5 12th alongside; and have installed a strategic new pond between the 10th and 11th holes. Thanks to the changes, distance enhancements and safety improvements, a new Par 72 course was created.

"There has never been a major renovation at Taylor Meadows," Mayor Rick Sollars said. "These changes not only make the course substantially better, they make it safer."

Several factors came into play with this renovation. The new pond will eliminate safety issues on the 11th tee box. The renovation and expansion takes in the Beech Daly-Newcastle corner lot, which is being used for the location of a  new "cart barn" and storage facility for the golf course. Taylor Meadows used to store equipment at  the old FIA Building to the east of the course, but that facility was sold to private developers and will be the future site of the Meadows Banquet Center.

Despite the renovations, Taylor Meadows kept the course open to the public, first in a nine-hole format and then in a revised 18-hole layout.

"This was challenging, but we still gave our customers an outstanding experience each and every time that they came to Taylor Meadows," Dobek said. "Our course is much better. We ended up with three new and exciting holes to play, and eventually a new cart barn facility will help us keep our equipment in top condition."

According to a story in Golf Course Architecture, the new pond on the tenth hole will lie in what could be referred to as the "big hitter" landing area. It is hoped that more players will be discouraged from using the driver off the tee on these holes. The reconstruction of the 11th and 12th holes took advantage of 7.5-acre plot of land that was been made available to the club.
Errant shots had led to an evaluation of safety at Taylor Meadows, and netting had been installed in numerous locations across the course. The new design of the 11th and 12th holes will decrease the risk of golfers hitting shots onto the nearby Beech Daly Road. The distance from the back tee on the 10th to the back tee on the reworked 11th hole has been increased from 220 to 265, and there will now be an unobstructed line of sight from one tee to the other. This will allow players to alert one another of any wayward shots.
