Prevent identity theft: shred your documents May 8 in Taylor

The City of Taylor’s second annual Free Shred Day is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8, outside Taylor City Hall, 23555 Goddard Road.

The day is sponsored by Shred Legal, which provides secure on-site document destruction. To participate, you must be in line by 12:30 p.m.

Residents are invited to bring two or three small boxes of documents for shredding. The maximum is 15 inches by 12 inches by 10 inches. The weight limit is 100 pounds of documents per person. Additional boxes will cost $4 each to shred. All shredded materials will be recycled.

To help prevent identity theft, the following items should be shredded:
●Documents that contain confidential material
●Documents that could be used for the purpose of identity theft
●Documents that could cause harm in the hands of criminals

Items that are acceptable include bank statements, canceled checks, canceled credit cards, credit card statements, debit card numbers and driver’s license numbers.

Also acceptable are employment information, insurance policy information, signatures, Social Security numbers, tax records and telephone numbers.

Not acceptable are newspaper, plastic, cardboard, magazines, CDs, VHS tapes, DVDs and bleached paper in bright colors.
