Rummage sale to raise funds to support ChristNet homeless shelter

A large rummage sale will raise funds to support a faith-based homeless shelter. The sale is set for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at the ChristNet Center in the lower level of West Mound United Methodist Church, 22395 Eureka Road, across the street from the Southland Shopping Center in Taylor.

Items will incde home decor, kitchen items, small household appliances, televisions, office equipment, furniture, lawn equipment, tools, books and more. Hot dogs and pop will be on sale.

As a faith-based initiative, ChristNet provides shelter, meals, clothing and personal care items on a daily basis to those who visit the center. In addition to meeting these immediate needs, ChristNet assists guests in gaining access to skills and services that will help them overcome the root causes of their homelessness. Perhaps most importantly, ChristNet provides guests a welcoming environment, hope and encouragement.

During the 2009-2010 season, ChristNet provided safe overnight shelter to 387 guests. There were 375 single adults of whom 22 were veterans, as well as five families with five adults and seven children. The center's youngest guest was 11 months old; the oldest guest was 64 years old. ChristNet provided 35 safe nights for children, 1,701 safe nights for women and 4,921 safe nights for men for a total of 6,658 safe nights.
