Taylor seniors without power are invited to cool down at the Ford Senior Center

Taylor seniors struggling with heat-related issues are invited to the city's William D. Ford Senior Activity Center, which is serving as a cooling station during power outages in the city.

Taylor Mayor Jeffrey P. Lamarand said the invitation was made after the power outages during the July 23 storms in the region. The Maplewood Senior Apartments, the American House complex and The Commons at The Villages of Taylor, all of which have heavy senior populations, were among the facilities that lost power. The SMART buses in the city are being used to transport any interested residents of the three facilities to the senior center.

Mayor Lamarand said the senior center would serve as a cooling station until it's no longer needed and that all seniors from the city are invited.

The Mayor said the last report he received the morning of July 24 was that 30 percent of the city was without power. Weather forecasts for the weekend predict additional storms.

Mayor Lamarand urged Taylor residents to help seniors who may need assistance. Anyone with a medical emergency should call 911 provided they have telephone service.

The Ford Senior Center is located north of Ecorse Road and west of Telegraph Road.
