Two Taylor high school graduates earn FOP Holly McGeogh Scholarships

Two recent Taylor high school graduates are the recipients of the seventh annual Holly McGeogh Memorial Scholarship provided by Taylor Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 123.

Truman High School graduate Margarite Ronan and Kennedy High School graduate Allison Peruski will each receive $1,000 toward their college tuition.

The award is named in the memory of Army Specialist Holly McGeogh, a 2002 Truman High School graduate who was killed in a bomb blast in January 2004. Spec. McGeogh, who was 19 at the time, planned to attend college when she returned home from the Army.

Truman winner Ronan, the 17-year-old daughter of Scott and Catherine Ronan of Taylor, plans to attend Wayne State University in the fall and is undecided on a major. She was selected by the FOP for her academic excellence and her involvement in school activities.

Counselor Jerry Abraham recommended Ronan for the scholarship, saying "Margarite has an excellent work ethic, self-discipline, a positive disposition and attitude. She is very self-determined and maintains a strong set of core values."

Peruski, the 17-year-old daughter of Joseph and Kelly Peruski of Taylor, also plans to attend Wayne State, where she will study radiation therapy. The Kennedy recipient was chosen for her academic performance, community involvement and essay.

"Holly McGeogh lived down the street and her family still has the flag at half mast with ribbons and flowers covering the yard," Peruski said. "Each day, as I drive by her house, I see all these signs as a constant reminder of how such a young girl was brave and fought for our country."

Both scholarship winners will receive their plaques at the Taylor Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 123 golf outing at 1 p.m. Friday, June 25, at Taylor Meadows Golf Club, 25360 Ecorse Road.

Since the inception of the scholarship, the Taylor FOP has distributed $14,000 in scholarship money to Taylor students.
