World Series qualifying update: Teams from Texas and California will play in Taylor
Ten teams will qualify for the Junior League World Series in Taylor: five teams from the United States and five international teams. Here are status updates as of Tuesday morning:
Asia-Pacific Region: Taipei City of Chinese Taipei is the regional champion.
Canada: The national tournament in Lethbridge, Alberta, ends Thursday night. Provincial champions from British Columbia and Alberta are 3-1 in pool play with one game to go.
Europe/Middle East/Africa Region: Kirovograd Center/Rivne, Ukraine, is the regional champion.
Latin America Region: Guatemala City, Guatemala, is the regional champion.
Mexico: Guaymas, Sonora, is the national champion.
Central Region: The regional tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana, ends Thursday night. The state champions of Iowa (3-0 in pool play) and Indiana (2-0) may be the teams to beat. The Michigan state champion from Midland (2-0) is the third unbeaten team in the region.
East Region: The regional tournament in Freehold, New Jersey, ends Thursday afternoon. The state champs of Rhode Island and the host team were unbeaten entering Tuesday’s action.
Southeast Region: The state champions of Georgia and Virginia qualified to play Tuesday for the championship of the regional tournament in Greenville, South Carolina.
Southwest Region: One of the two state champions of Texas will play in Taylor after winning the regional at Midland, Texas. The Texas East state champion from Tyler was unbeaten heading into Tuesday’s regional final against Texas West champ Waco.
West Region: One of the two state champions of California will make its way to Taylor after winning the regional at Laguna Niguel, California. North champ Rocklin and South champ El Monte qualified for the regional finals on Tuesday.
Opening ceremonies of the Junior League World Series are scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday at Taylor's Heritage Park. Games get under way at noon Sunday. The schedule and other World Series news can be found at www.cityoftaylor.com/worldseries.
