Annual community event helps children prepare for school

The annual Taylor Back to School Family Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, August 30 at the Taylor Human Services Center, 26650 Eureka Road.

Family Fun Day will include games and activities for kids, music, information, free food and school supplies.

“This event is designed to arm kids with the tools that will encourage them to learn,” said Jeffrey Durr, program coordinator for the City of Taylor.  “In addition, it helps to raise the self-esteem of the students so they can make better choices in life.”

The event is sponsored by the City of Taylor Community Development Department along with Taylor Connection and Fish & Loaves.

Fish & Loaves is supplying bulk quantities of food and a majority of the school supplies. Fish & Loaves is a nonprofit organization seeking to ensure that no one goes hungry in the Downriver area.

Other contributors are Gleaners Community Food Bank, Wal-mart, Cattleman’s Market, Oakwood Wound Care, Taylor Teen Health Center, Wayne-Metro Community Health Services, First Step, Save-a-Lot foods, Health Alliance Plan and Staples.

The school supplies program is limited and advanced registration is necessary for families in need.  Applications are available during regular business hours at the City of Taylor Department of Golf, Parks and Recreation, 22805 Goddard Road.

The deadline for school supply sign-up is August 28. For more information call 734 955-3744.
