State softball champions from Taylor honored by city
The state championship softball team from the Taylor Northeast and North Central Little Leagues were honored by the city on September 4. The girls won the state championship in the Junior Division of Little League, which is for 13- and 14-year-old players. The state title came the same month as the state championship in baseball won by the Taylor Northwest Little League all-stars. The players, coaches and managers received the city's Good Sportsmanship Award for their accomplishments. "We need to change our official motto to 'City of Champions,'" said Mayor Cameron Priebe during the presentation at the City Council meeting. "We had the Northwest team at the last council meeting and tonight we have the great pleasure of recognizing our champions in softball from Taylor Northeast/North Central." The 13 girls won the state tournament in Grand Rapids. Manager Glen Mansfield said it was the first state title in softball for teams from Taylor North Central and Northeast and only the second in District 5 history. Players on the team included Alyssa McCullough, Jessika Mansfield, Amanda Daugherty, Beonka Pope, Shelby Meade, Samantha Zaborowski, Alexis Setser, Allison Peruski, Kalyn Labut, Rachel Rakes, Krystyn Nelson, Christina Miller and Desiree Miller. Coaching with Manager Mansfield were Meghan Doute and Marty Miller. Mansfield also is softball coordinator for Taylor Northeast. Among the league officials accompanying the team were Brian Holdren, president of Taylor Northeast, Ron Zaborowski, president of Taylor North Central, and Bill Kessler, vice president and softball coordinator of Taylor North Central.
