Detroit Airport CEO to lead industry-wide government affairs committee

Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Lester Robinson has been named chairman of the Government Affairs Committee for Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA), the leading trade group of commercial airports in the North America, for 2008.

As committee chairman, Robinson will lead the national airport industry’s policy-making body for federal government programs, legislation and regulations critical to nation’s air transportation system. The committee, composed of airport leaders from across the United States, is responsible for steering the association’s government affairs strategy and policy positions in conjunction with the Board of Directors.  Robinson was named vice chairman of the committee in mid-2007.

“It is rewarding to know that the airport industry recognizes what a talented leader we have in Lester Robinson,” said Wayne County Airport Authority Board Chairman David Treadwell. “Lester has proven himself to be a true collaborator, working successfully with airlines and other airport stakeholders to enhance and expand our airports. That track record will serve both ACI-NA and the airport industry well in Washington.”

ACI-NA President Greg Principato agreed, saying “Lester exemplifies the type of leadership that will be necessary for airports to tackle the many challenges and opportunities facing the industry today.”

As the Voice of Airports®, ACI-NA represents local, regional and state governing bodies that own and operate commercial airports across the United States and Canada.  ACI-NA member airports enplane more than 95 percent of the domestic and virtually all of the international airline passenger and cargo traffic in North America.

Robinson was named director of airports for Wayne County in April 2000. Upon the establishment of the Wayne County Airport Authority as an independent authority to operate Detroit Metropolitan and Willow Run airports in 2002, Robinson became the authority’s first CEO.  He is also the first African American to lead Wayne County’s Airports.

Robinson was appointed to the ACI-NA Board of Directors for a three-year term beginning in January 2007. In early 2007, Airport Revenue News named Robinson "2006 Best Airport Director of the Year" for airports serving more than five million passengers annually.
