United Way, partners offer free tax prep in Taylor
Regional Asset Building Coalition begins busy tax season by helping families, individuals claim income tax credit
United Way for Southeastern Michigan has formed the Regional Asset Building Coalition to help families in Southeast Michigan save and build assets. The coalition and its partners are currently operating IRS-sanctioned Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout Southeastern Michigan where low-income individuals and families may have their taxes prepared and claim important tax credits.
In Taylor, a VITA site will be open through April 8 at the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency at Taylor Human Service Center, 26650 Eureka Road. Hours are 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Appointments are accepted at (313) 843-2550. Walk-ins are welcome.
Eligible individuals in the community are urged to make an appointment at the Taylor location and take advantage of the valuable tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Home Heating Credit. The tax credit is for working individuals and families that make less than $40,000 a year. Workers that qualify for the EITC and file an income tax return can receive a refund, even if they had no income tax liability for the given year.
The following families and individuals are eligible for the EITC:
- Families (with one child) that earned less than $33,995 in 2008 (or less than $36,995 for married workers) are eligible for a credit up to $2,917.
- Families (with two children) that earned less than $38,646 in 2008 (or less than $41,646 for married workers) are eligible for a credit up to $4,824.
- Workers (without a qualifying child) that earned less than $12,880 in 2008 (or less than $15,880 for married workers) are eligible for a credit of up to $438.
