Auxiliary Police

Mission:  "The Auxiliary Police Unit is charged with providing a ready standby force to assist the Uniform Division, or other Divisions as may be directed, in times of emergency, including such duties as may be necessary and determined by the Chief of Police or his designee and under authority of a Disaster Decree."

The Taylor Auxiliary Police Civil Defense was organized as a  volunteer position, in 1962.  The Auxiliary Police shall handle the vacation house checks, business checks, school checks and holiday shopping center anti-theft programs and such other programs as deemed necessary to further the Crime Prevention Unit goals.  The Auxiliary Police shall maintain a state of readiness in order to handle requests from sworn officers for assistance in the event of emergencies.
Preliminary Requirements:
 
  • Citizen in the United States of America
  • Age at least 21 years by the start date of training
  • High School graduate or equivalent (G. E. D.)
  • A valid Michigan Motor Vehicle Operator's or Chauffeur's License
  • Good moral character - traffic and criminal records will be examined

  • Physically and mentally able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to perform all of the established duties and responsibilities related to the position

  • Ability to pass a background check and any other investigation deemed necessary 

  • Ability to successfully compete the basic training curriculum as determined by the     Taylor Auxiliary Police Department

  • Taylor residents are preferred

Essential Job Functions:

  • The Auxiliary Officers assist the Taylor police department in preserving "life, liberty and property."  The officers responsibilities include security patrols of schools, parks and businesses, and security for high school football games and basketball games and city festivals.  These are only a few of many responsibilities of the Taylor Auxiliary.

  • Training shall run a minimum of 219 hours of class type instruction, physical fitness and range training.
  • An Officer joining the Taylor Auxiliary must complete the 16 weeks of training, which consists of the following:

  Curriculum identified as general and not total in content.
After an Officer graduates, he/she is required to attend a monthly training session and to qualify every six months with his/her firearm.  They must work at least 20 hours per month at details and scheduled road patrols and assist the Taylor police department as needed.
