Skate camp August 14-18 at the Taylor Sportsplex

Boys and girls ages 7 to 13 are invited to learn to skate during skate camp August 14-18 at the Taylor Sportsplex, 13333 Telegraph Road.

The camp, which runs daily from 9 a.m. to noon, is presented by the Wayne County Community College District Continuing Education Division. The class fee is $10. Skate rental is $2 a day.

Youngsters learn how to skate under the direction of qualified "learn to skate" instructors. They are national figure skating competitor Katie Uhlig, national speed skating senior competitor Marc Afholter, 11-year-old state speed skating champion and national competitor Andrew Astalos, 15-year-old travel hockey player Samantha Patterson and Kyle Kos, a former member of the Motor City Mechanics hockey team.

There will be demonstrations in speed skating, hockey and figure skating, inspiring presentations and question-and-answer sessions. Each day, students will receive 1 1/2 hours of ice skating instruction and 1 1/2 hours of off-ice strength, conditioning and nutritional instruction.
