Venezuela coach played in four World Series, Twins organization

Luis Portillo, a coach with the Maracaibo, Venezuela, team, has pro experience. He played for Fort Myers, Florida, in the Minnesota Twins organization in the 1990s.

When it comes to World Series, Portillo knows what he’s talking about. He played for Team Venezuela in the Little League World Series in 1985 and 1986 and the Senior League World Series in 1988 and 1989.

His most vivid youth baseball memories come from the 1986 postseason.

Portillo, a pitcher, struck out 16 batters in a 1-0 nine-inning win over Team Mexico in the Latin America region. In the World Series, he gave up a home run that allowed Taiwan to tie the game at 4-4. The game went into extra innings. Portillo struck out 15 batters, but the coach replaced him in the ninth. Taiwan won 11-4 and went on to win the World Series.

“I remember everything that year,” Portillo said. “Williamsport has a very good World Series of Little League.”
