Governor's EO reopens gyms and indoors pools with restrictions

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced today (September 3, 2020) that gyms and indoor pools will be allowed to reopen on a limited basis, beginning Wednesday, September 9, 2020. She also allowed organized sports to resume, although she cautioned against contact sports activity.

The City of Taylor has been preparing for this announcement, and has plans in place to reopen the Taylor Recreation Center and Taylor Sportsplex (dates and more information to come next week). Both have been closed for months. However, the William Ford Senior Activities Center is not planned to reopen immediately, pending more planning and renovations,

The caution against contact sports came from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, although it did not prohibit them from being played. “Contact” sports are defined as sports activities with more than occasional or fleeting contact. The governor urged school districts across the state to carefully follow the guidelines to keep players and adults safe.

According to the Detroit Free Press, as of yesterday (September 2), more than 103,000 Michigan residents have contracted COVID-19, resulting in more than 6,500 deaths.
