COVID-19 UPDATE: Experts rebuke Sen. Shirkey's views on 'herd immunity', call for hearing

COVID-19

According to the Michigan Executive Office of the Governor, on October 12, five public health experts sent an open letter to Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey explaining the problems with his recent comments on herd immunity. That and more in the Wayne County Report for October 13, 2020.

In their letter, the public health experts said, “If ‘herd immunity’ were to begin after about 80 percent of the state’s population has been infected, as some believe, then 6.5 million more Michiganders would still need to contract COVID-19. At the current mortality rate, this would mean more than 30,000 additional deaths – more than four times the number of deaths to date.

According to countywide health data for October 12, 2020, Taylor recorded one new case of COVID-19 and no new deaths. The case upped the overall total to 1,088 while deaths remained at 80.
