Angela Winton appointed to City Council

Angela Winton was named the newest member of the City Council on Tuesday, February 5.

Winton replaces Alex Garza, who resigned his post on January 1 after being elected to the Michigan House of Representatives. After being voted into her position by council and sworn into office by City Clerk Cindy Bower, Winton immediately took a chair on the council and participated in the reminder of the regular meeting.

The new member was approved by a 4-2 vote. City Council, per guidelines outlined in the City Charter, is tasked with filling any vacancy. Council requested applications for the post in December and 17 people applied by the deadline.

Of those 17, five were nominated: Winton (by Pro Tem Angela Croft); Christopher Verdun (by Councilman Dan Bzura); William Patts (by Councilwoman Caroline Patts); Carol Moran (by Councilman Butch Ramik); and Ron Thiede (by Chairman Tim Woolley).

Winton was the first voted upon and was approved. This is the third vacancy filled by the council in a little over five years. The previous two appointees were Jack Myers and Dave Gorgon.

The new councilmember has 18 years of extensive experience in management and human resources including administration, training, budgets and payroll while working as the current chief HR officer at The Senior Alliance (Wayne, MI). Before that, she was the HR generalist and payroll administrator with West Side Beer Distributing (Romulus, MI) and HR-payroll manager at Flooring America (Southfield, MI). She also launched and currently manages Metro Detroit Share, a 501(c)3.

She is graduate of Eastern Michigan University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management in 2003.

She also served as a recreation commissioner in Taylor; on the committee for the Center for Women’s and Children’s Health, Henry Ford Hospital; as a member of the Karen Colina Wilson Foundation Rose Ella Golf Outing benefiting the Cleveland Clinic; and on Holiday Meals on Wheels for the last six years.

Winton is a 1996 graduate of Taylor Center High School, where she was the school’s valedictorian.
