Register now for Happy Soles 5K to benefit Fish & Loaves

Registration is under way for the 10th annual Happy Soles 5K Run and Walk, scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday, June 9, at Taylor’s Heritage Park.

The 5K is a key supporting event for the Fish & Loaves Community Food Pantry, a faith-based, nonprofit, volunteer-operated, client-choice pantry based in Taylor. The pantry is committed to ensuring that no one goes hungry or without adequate nutrition in Taylor and six surrounding communities: Allen Park, Brownstown Township, Dearborn Heights, Romulus, Southgate and Woodhaven.

Participants can register online at The registration fee for the 5K is $25 before May 28, $30 between May 28 and June 9, and $35 on race day. Members of active military and first responders receive a $5 discount.

Event participants registered before May 28 will receive a tech shirt and the first 300 finishers will receive a custom medal.  Awards will be given to the first overall winners, male and female; the first male and female overall masters winners; and the top three finishers in each age group, male and female. The age groups are 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 and 80 and older.

There also will be a half-mile free “Fun Run” for children and families starting at 7:30 a.m.

Heritage Park is located at 12111 Pardee Road. The 5K has a certified “flat and fast” course. The race starts and finishes in front of the Sheridan Center Open-Air Pavilion, takes runners outside Heritage Park and makes use of the park’s sylvan setting. The event is endorsed by the Governor’s Council Pure Michigan Fitness Series.

Race sponsors include Beaumont, Comcast, Humana, Wade Trim, Life Bridge Church, Northline Church, Patriot Plans, Taylor Chevrolet, Shwedel Dental, Brenda Murphy/BioMedical Labs, Chapatwala Family McDonald’s, Two Men and a Truck, Wayne-Metro Community Action Agency, Oak Street Health and the Taylor Auxiliary Police.

Prizes have been donated for a raffle, open to all paid runners and walkers.

All proceeds benefit the Fish & Loaves Food Pantry, which distributes 1.6 million pounds of food annually to families in need. Donations of canned goods for the pantry shelves will be accepted on the day of the 5K.

“Although Fish & Loaves welcomes donated foods, we continue to purchase on average $25,000 to $27,000 per month,” said Executive Director Mary Hollens. “On average, we see 1,000 people per month. Everyone’s support means the world to us.”
