Governor tightens mask-wearing requirements in Michigan

GOVERNOR WHITMER

Governor Gretchen Whitmer today (July 10) tightened mask-wearing requirements in the State of Michigan, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A new executive order:

  • Requires any business that is open to the public to refuse entry or service to people who refuse to wear a face covering, with limited exceptions
  • Requires the use of face coverings in crowded outdoor spaces
  • Reiterates that individuals are required to wear a face covering whenever they are in an indoor public space.

The order takes effect Monday, July 13. Violation is a misdemeanor and could bring a $500 fine. Gov. Whitmer said governors in the states of Kansas, Maine, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Washington have issued similar requirements on businesses.

Gov. Whitmer said that “by wearing masks now, we can put our state in a stronger position so our kids can return to school safety in the fall.” She urged state residents to “mask up.” Those exempt from wearing a mask in businesses include people younger than 5, those who cannot medically tolerate a face covering, and those eating or drinking while seated at a food service establishment.
